Brand Refresh vs. Brand Reinvention

As designers, we’re often our own toughest critics.

It’s easy to stare at your logo for years and wonder if it’s still good enough. Is it modern enough? Does it still represent who you are? Should it be refreshed? Or should you scrap it entirely and start over?

Lately, I’ve been asking myself those same questions.

What I’ve realized is that not every brand needs a complete reinvention. Sometimes it doesn’t even need a refresh. Sometimes it just needs room to breathe.

I’ve always believed your core identity should remain recognizable, but that doesn’t mean every expression of your brand has to look exactly the same. As creatives, we evolve. Our interests shift. Our experiences shape us. The work changes. Our perspective changes. Why shouldn’t our brand have the freedom to explore alongside us?

Over the past few months, I’ve started designing new logos for Burke Design Co. Not because the old one was broken, but because I wanted to create something different. Something that reflected where I am creatively today. It’s been a fun exercise and, honestly, one I should have given myself permission to do years ago.

The best part? None of it changes who I am.

My values are the same. My approach to design is the same. My passion for helping brands tell their story is stronger than ever. The logo is simply another creative expression of that story.

Maybe that’s the difference between a refresh and a reinvention.

A refresh polishes what’s already there. A reinvention changes who you are. And I don’t think my brand needs to become someone else. I think it just needs the freedom to keep creating.

So for now, I’m going to keep sketching, experimenting, and following whatever feels inspiring. Because sometimes the most rewarding design work isn’t for a client.

Sometimes it’s for yourself.
